Back Pain & Pelvic Pain

Back pain is the real bitch

Isnt it blah that the time you are actually in pain you cant take most painkillers! Back pain can turn a nice girl into a grump at the the speed of light. This has been experimentally verified by the occasional husband to his peril.

More than 2/3 of pregnant women suffer back pain. Pelvic pain is a tad less common thankfully.
So what can you do other than swill pills like a drunken sailor. Acupuncture is really effective and water gymnastics is recommended. Your doctor might suggest Tylenol (acetaminophen) in certain cases. Careful posture and avoiding extensive walking can be useful.
Best wishes my suffering sisters.

Swollen Ankles

ferragamo

ferragamo

We are talking a real crisis. An existential one. A warm , picture-book day and now those Ferragamo heels cut into your swollen ankles like piano wire.
God I feel fat all over. My fingers feel like sausages.
Really disgusting this time…enough self loathing, what to do?
Oedema! She said, whispering the name of the beast.

The short answer: put your feet up and eat celery.
Get it checked if your face or your hands are too puffy, but put those feet up, raised, on a pillow.
And try to lie on your left side to free your vena cava.

Crisis fading… fading… Did I say drink lots of water?
Yes, and wear trainers.

Morning Sickness

Vampire with morning sickness not scared of garlic

Vampire with morning sickness not very scared of garlic

Yes, its morning sickness. Dont make me smell that bacon… urgghh too late.
I have heard of some pretty nutty remedies for this in my time.
Some of these might be still be useful to you, especially if you’re the type who believes garlic protects against vampires.
Ok here we go:

  • Magnetic Seasickness wrist bands
  • Tongue pulling (A yoga thing)
  • Licorice
  • Tim-tams
  • Lemon tea
  • Almost anything on an oil burner
  • Audio CDs

One of the newer treatments that looks like it reduces the severity of the nausea is pyridoxine (vitamin B6).  You can get it here.

And drug-wise you can ask your doctor about Zofran.

You are still having trouble with solid food?….hmmm
Consider taking a dog poo bag and peppermints in your purse- handy when the urge strikes.
And dont forget to grab yourself a blender. You can make smoothies and juices to keep your energy going.
The good news is morning sickness often fades by week 14.
Good luck girls.

Leg Cramps

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009
What are we going to do about a leg cramp?

What are we going to do about a leg cramp?

SING “What are we going to do about a leg-cramp?“ This is to the tune of “What are going to do about Maria

Leg cramps are super annoying, especially when you get them at night. You partner has no clue what to do, and for sure they’re painful little buggers. Moaning and bitching is of course mandatory but what else?

The old remedy of salt is a bit pointless now as we all eat so much of it. A good quality multivitamin is the first step. In particular, magnesium tablets are the way to go. I would take 5 mmol in the morning and 10 mmol before lights-out.
Do your partner a favour.

Some good multivitamin and magnesium tablets are generally available.
